We would like to draw your attention to a special section called Year 1989 - Dimensions of Change arranged together with the Polish Filmmakers Association and the Goethe Institute. The films selected for this section include Polish and German titles talking about the fall of communism and its consequences. One of the highlights will certainly be the first screening in Poland of Bartek Konopka's latest film Króliki ala Berlin (Berlin-style Rabbits) which is sure to become an audience favourite this year. Another important event relating to the subject will be a panel discussion with the participation of the best film directors who will talk about how the political transition period initiated in 1989 was portrayed in film art. The event held in the studio of "Trójka" the Third Public Radio Station will be broadcast live nationwide.
An international panel of judges will award the Grand Prix PLANETE DOC REVIEW and the Millennium Award. Poland will be represtented in the competition with two titles: Marcin Latałło's Nasza ulica- wersja kinowa (Our Street - a cinema version) and Beata Dziadowicz's Latawce (Kites). Other entries include a Slovak film which has won acclaim at the Cannes film festival Blind Loves by J. Lehotski, the Danish winner of the UDFA festival of Amsterdam Burma VJ by A. This year we will have a host of hot DEBATES on various topics inspired by festival films. Apart from the said panel discussion devoted to the year 1989 and its presentation in cinematic art, Garri Kasparov's visit will quite likely spark up the interest of viewers and the media. Acclaimed journalist Jacek Żakowski will talk to Kasparov after premiere screening of Masha Novikowa's film about the democratic opposition's leader in Russia In the holy fire of the Revolution.. The starting point for another debate entitled Copyright Under Arrest will be the film R.I.P. Remix Manifesto. According to film director Brett Gaylor the enforcement of copyright laws today may bring the civilisation to a standstill. As each year, on 9 May, we will celebrate International Fair Trade Day with a debate on ecology and conscious consumption hosted by Polityka weekly which will follow the screening of Age of stupid.
